The problem with water tanks

In many countries rooftop water tanks, freestanding water towers or water tanks are used for portable and domestic water supply. Depending on the climatic conditions, water tanks pose a microbiological risk. The moist environment is an ideal breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and viruses.

For the purposes of disinfection, chlorine is usually included into the water, with all the unpleasant consequences for the environment and people in everyday use.

Bacteria in water-bearing systems can be found in two conditions. Either floating freely in the water or fixed in biofilm. Embedded in a slimy, viscous extracellular polymeric substance, the biofilm inhabitants occupy all moist surfaces.

Disinfection of the water itself usually leaves biofilms unharmed and is not an effective measure to prevent them.
